OK, so you’ve rolled out a powerful new PPM solution. It’s a beautiful thing ready to be that single source of truth your organization needs. While PPM software is designed to improve portfolio planning and project execution, it needs quality data to work. For project team members, this equates to a weekly timecard. What’s in it for them? Think of it like this: your family just went to Bali and all they brought you back was a lousy T-shirt.
Don’t be surprised if there is a lack of enthusiasm for this new chore. For them, it looks like management has added extra work, along with a healthy dose of Big Brother to their every working hour.
Sound familiar? In previous blogs, I introduced the concept of the Workberg, which is a metaphor for how work gets done – structured work above and unstructured work below the waterline. Catch up on anything you missed by checking out part 1 and part 2 of this series. We’ve also discussed how different roles are using tools like PPM solutions and collaborative work management solutions.
What if we could stop thinking about the waterline? Instead, consider how a combined solution would give everyone the best of both worlds – bring together PPM and collaborative work management. Here’s what you get with this combination:
- Team members get to track their time and have access to collaborative work experience which promotes communication, collaboration, and provides visibility into work to get their work done
- The PMO, project managers, and resource managers get relevant data, time tracking and status reporting, related to the projects they are responsible for delivering
Ultimately, it’s about bringing together strategic planning, capacity planning, resource management, and work execution. Even better, this approach makes it easier for everyone to get work done, faster – with a little fun thrown in for good measure.
Sure, it may not be as exciting as a trip to Bali, but going beyond PPM by embracing work and resource management offers companies the opportunity for increase efficiencies and gain better visibility to achieve their goals.
