Between the rise of the “accidental” project manager and the proliferation of projects being managed via email, and spreadsheets, most teams today are struggling to streamline work, optimize meetings, and stay focused on long-term planning.
I recently interviewed Dawn Sarnecky, a web producer on the digital marketing team at Planview. Dawn helps triage, facilitate, and manage work to digital marketing team members – from assignment to completion. She manages an intake and demand management process, where she receives requests across the global organization, in four different time zones. Working in a cross-functional marketing group means she collaborates daily with web developers, product managers, producers, designers, and others – not to mention external agencies and their resources.
It is essential for her to easily understand who is working on what so she can plan based on the team’s capacity and organization’s demand. It’s a challenging role – and one that I think many people who manage teams or projects of any kind can relate to.
