Reboot and Reimagine: Adapting Your Enterprise’s Approach to Embrace Ongoing Change

Environmental concerns, economic strife, the pandemic, and global trade wars – business leaders are juggling ongoing uncertainty and volatility. As a result, they must ensure their organizations are ready for continuous change. This requires shifting focus away from rigid operational processes that were built to last for long periods of relative stability, to orchestrating fast and adaptive systems and processes that are built for ongoing change.

Adapting Your Enterprise’s Approach to Embrace Ongoing Change

In the new world of work – where uncertainty and volatility are the norm rather than the exception – enterprises must strategically leverage, consistently demonstrate, and continuously evolve their adaptability in three key areas.

Marketplace Adaptability

It goes without saying that business strategy must be aligned with customer needs. Now these strategies need to continuously be re-evaluated to maintain that alignment, potentially shifting operations as requirements and opportunities change. Simply put, it is not enough to pay attention to customers. To reap the rewards of adaptability, enterprises must be customer obsessed across all teams and departments.

Technological Adaptability

Business operations need to be rooted in and driven by technology that supports the stated customer-focused strategies. They also need to be flexible enough to change as these strategies evolve, which requires establishing visibility on three levels: capability, structural and governance.

  • Capability – what products and services, both existing and new, are needed to transfer value to customers. Primary activities should be focused on these capabilities to ensure delivery of the work achieves the desired outcome.
  • Structural – how work is defined and executed. This includes putting outcome-oriented processes and metrics in place to support cross-team and internal/external collaboration, shared outcome-oriented milestones to keep everyone on track and continuously delivering value, templates to ensure consistency and standardization for repeatable work, and the ability to optimize resources (people and budget) based on expected value delivery.
  • Governance – how decisions are made and monitored. This involves having the necessary controls and transparency in place to keep everyone in alignment when things change, prioritize work based on business impact, ensure compliance, and generate insights that support faster and better risk mitigation.

Organizational Adaptability

Adaptive leadership is essential to ensure that the entire enterprise can thrive in a dynamic environment. Optimized work management solutions support and enhance ongoing change management, which is required when strategies keep shifting. When teams know and feel that they are supported, clearly understand why adjustments are necessary, and are empowered with the tools required to carry out their jobs, they are much less resistant to change – and much more open to new ways of working.

Learn More About Embracing Adaptability

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a stark truth: adaptability is no longer just a matter of business success — now it’s essential for business survival. Enterprises that embrace this truth will lead the way and those that dread it will fall behind.
