Planview ERGs Honor Juneteenth, Pride Month, and More in June

With so much happening in June, we want to outline important events at Planview with some employee insight.

At Planview, ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) play a crucial role in creating connections and involving people in groups that pertain to people’s interests. Our ERGs, such as Planview Kaleidoscope, Pride, and Women at Planview, are actively organizing events and educating employees about their initiatives.

Alongside what is happening in our ERGs this month, Planview also recognizes Pride, Juneteenth, and mental health – particularly in men – during June.

First, let’s learn about Juneteenth, why it matters, and what you can do.

Juneteenth

Juneteenth is celebrated on the 19th of June and is observed by Planview as a global holiday. This day marks the end of slavery in the United States, an important moment in American history.

Although Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform 250,000 enslaved people that they were free.

Why it matters

It’s important to reflect on certain milestones in history and promote important conversations.

Juneteenth represents liberation from the beliefs, policies, and systems put in place by oppressors. The ideologies perpetrated discrimination, immorality, and inhumanity.

Juneteenth is the starting pillar of representation of black people in America.

Juneteenth helps us remember the important events that brought us to where we are today but also emphasizes ongoing progress to come. Specifically, Planview is promoting learning opportunities in the Kaleidoscope ERG and providing opportunities to raise BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) voices.

Jarvis also mentioned how he loves that Juneteenth is representative of Planview and is part of the company culture.

What you can do

There are many ways to honor Juneteenth and learn about its importance with podcasts, documentaries, events, and more. Here’s a list of activities that encourage reflection, learning, and action during the month of June, and all year long.

Next up is Pride Month!

Pride Month

Pride Month is an international, month-long celebration and commemoration of the LGBTQ+ community. The origins of Pride Month date back to the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ activism.

Why it matters

Pride Month is an opportunity for visibility, community, and advocacy in the LGBTQ+ community. This month highlights love and brings awareness to important issues in the community.

Pride Month is a good time to reflect on everything that the community has gone through and all of the accomplishments the people before us have made.

Yessenia Zavala, co-leader of the Pride ERG

What you can do

Raising awareness, supporting LGBTQ+ voices, and taking part in local events are great places to start.

At Planview, the Pride ERG is planning to host Pride trivia this month. The group brings in educational speakers at least once a year – the latest was Professor John Amaechi, a joint effort with the Kaleidoscope ERG. The group also takes part in local events to give back to the community and is involved in as many sponsorships as possible.

Last but certainly not least, we want to take the time to highlight wellness.

Mental Health and Wellness

June is recognized as Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month. During this time, many people, organizations, mental health advocates, and communities raise awareness and support men’s mental health awareness and initiatives.

Why it matters

It’s important to promote mental health and encourage everyone to speak up and break the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

What you can do

Building a support system at your job is critical, whether it’s a few close coworkers, a larger peer group (such as an ERG), or both.

Planview employees encourage their peers to join the ERGs that best suit each person’s interests and find people within ERGs who can support them. It’s important to utilize resources and always put mental health first.

Yessenia mentioned how men’s mental health, especially, doesn’t get talked about enough and how mental health conversations are important to prevent people from bottling up their emotions. She pointed to music and exercise, along with being open to learning what works best for each person throughout their mental health journey.

Planview’s ERGs are a portal for creating connections and building a support system.

She also mentioned how the ERGs provide a safe space for people to speak up and talk with each other, and the Women of Planview ERG allows women to connect and talk about issues that impact women.

Planview Opportunities

With all that said, June is full of exciting events and learning opportunities, and the Planview team is here to support and advocate for important events and get its employees involved through ERGs.
