And as we are thrown into the fires of <a title=\"The Accidental Project Manager\" href=\"\/work-collaboration\/\">\u201caccidental project management\u201d<\/a> and grass roots project execution, we look for tools and technologies that will help us improve project and team collaboration.\u00a0 However, most of us instinctively run to what\u2019s commonly readily available \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 email and spreadsheets \u2013 and as we find shortcomings in those tools we seek newer, more modern solutions to help keep pace. These are the findings of an Appleseed Partners <a title=\"Infographic: 5 Reasons Teams Fail to Collaborate Effectively at Work\" href=\"\/2018-survey-results-show-businesses-have-yet-to-conquer-project-collaboration-infographic\/\">survey<\/a>, commissioned by Planview, of 200 people based in North America who manage or participate in projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The survey respondents revealed that their top three tools for collaboration are email (73 percent), spreadsheets (62 percent), and the phone (53 percent).<\/strong> About 40 percent of respondents said they have tried other online collaboration tools, such as cloud-based storage, online cloud tools, and shared spaces. Unfortunately, when it comes to the <a title=\"The Accidental Project Manager\" href=\"\/accidental-project-manager\/\">collaboration needs of modern, virtual teams<\/a>, these solutions offer limited capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Complicating collaboration efforts even more, the survey showed that instead of improving project and team collaboration, we create the opposite \u2013 a <a title=\"Wiki: Tower of Babel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tower_of_Babel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tower of Babel<\/a> \u2013 where everyone ends up using different tools (<strong>4-5 different tools)<\/strong> in an effort to better collaborate on projects.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5588 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/PLab.jpg\" alt=\"Avoid a Tower of Babel Scenario\" width=\"663\" height=\"564\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shockingly, 33 percent also said that no one on their team is using the exact same set of tools. How does anyone keep track of actions and project milestones with that many moving parts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inevitably, senior management, project managers, and team members report major disconnects and worries about missing information. <strong>The result is that teams waste nine weeks per year<\/strong>, according to the survey.<\/p>\n<p>As tempting as it is to adopt new technology, it would appear the use of these disparate tools only takes us full circle \u2013 back to the tried and true email to stay focused on daily priorities. Email has a role but is not a viable solution for today\u2019s teams.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time to end email addiction, reduce the number of tools, and get everyone on the same page to improve project collaboration!
