A recent study by Okta, for example, found that nearly <a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/employees-are-accessing-more-and-more-business-apps-study-finds-11549580017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 percent of businesses have more than 200 apps<\/a> in their arsenal. Pegasystems Inc. reviewed 5 million hours of desktop activity only to discover that\u00a0<a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/employees-switch-apps-more-than-1100-times-a-day-decreasing-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the average employee switches between 35 different apps<\/a> more than 1,100 times <em>every day<\/em>! It\u2019s disruptive.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Imagine that a project manager is managing resources for an upcoming project. This individual is trying to make sure that they have enough equipment and human resources available to move the project forward as scheduled. After determining the resources are available, the project manager then remembers that they need to send some documentation over to the relevant workers.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the project manager forgets exactly where said documentation is. They look through their inbox, and it\u2019s not there. They can\u2019t remember if it\u2019s stored in a Dropbox repository\u2014or a Box repository. The names are similar enough as it is. Was it in SharePoint? In a Google Drive folder somewhere?<\/p>\n<p>The longer the search goes, the more likely the project manager will be to forget what they were doing in the first place. According to RingCentral, 56 percent of employees report that <a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/netstorage.ringcentral.com\/documents\/connected_workplace.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">having to switch from one application to the next<\/a> is disruptive to their workflow.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. It wastes time.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hopping from one platform to the next and back again isn\u2019t exactly the best use of time. It\u2019s a productivity killer.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Of course, time spent searching for information while moving from one platform to the next is time that <em>can\u2019t <\/em>be spent on other important work functions.<\/p>\n<p>Deploy too many applications across your enterprise, and you very well may end up decreasing productivity significantly\u2014even though your investments in technology were ostensibly made to do the opposite.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. It\u2019s stressful.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Everyone knows how frustrating it can be to use technology. Maybe a new software-as-a-service (SaaS) program receives a buggy update, and performance takes a nosedive. Maybe you\u2019re using a tool for the first time, and you\u2019re struggling to figure it out.
