Teams in every department \u2014 from Software Development to Organizational Development, IT Operations to Marketing Operations \u2014 practice Lean in their daily work.<\/p>\n<p>The workflows, organizational structures, work types, and associated challenges for each of these teams play out in diverse ways. Lean has universal applications, but it\u2019s not universally applied in the same way. There are, however, some overarching trends: Flow is top priority, Kanban is king, and WIP (work in process) is the most common metric.<\/p>\n<p>With flow top of mind, it makes sense that the majority of respondents named Kanban boards as their Lean tool of choice. Other tools associated with Kanban, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/wip-limits-how-to-journey-safely-into-the-unknown\/\" data-ol-has-click-handler=\"\">WIP limits<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/resources\/guide\/lean-principles-101\/what-is-continuous-improvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ol-has-click-handler=\"\">Kanban boards<\/a>\u00a0are by far the most widely used Lean tool: Kanban boards enable teams and organizations to visualize and improve the flow of work at the the goal is to create flow, implementing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/resources\/articles\/what-is-kanban\/\" data-ol-has-click-handler=\"\">WIP (work in process) limits<\/a>\u00a0is the way to get there. WIP limits, the second-most used Lean tool, are the key element of practicing Kanban. WIP limits are an enabling constraint that allows teams to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/identifying-bottlenecks-using-queue-lanes\/\" data-ol-has-click-handler=\"\">identify bottlenecks<\/a>\u00a0and mitigate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/do-you-have-5-minutes-the-true-cost-of-context-switching\/\" data-ol-has-click-handler=\"\">context switching<\/a>.
