{"id":6973,"date":"2018-08-07T14:47:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-07T19:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/?p=6973"},"modified":"2019-08-15T14:57:14","modified_gmt":"2019-08-15T19:57:14","slug":"begin-to-deliver-strategy-fast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/begin-to-deliver-strategy-fast\/","title":{"rendered":"Begin to Deliver Strategy\u2026 Fast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ll recall, we previously got you set up to translate your organization\u2019s strategy into a top down vision with metrics in the blog, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/failing-to-deliver-strategy-slowly\/\">Failing to Deliver Strategy\u2026 Slowly<\/a>.\u201d In addition, you started to create a plan to deliver iteratively and measure against the metrics allowing future work to be defined based on the results to date.\u00a0 But no one can do this alone\u2014you need a strategy planning team to set up a strategic plan that the organization can deliver\u2026 fast.<\/p>\n<p>As we start assembling your team, keep in mind this key point from the previous blog:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cStrategy is how an organization represents themselves, differentiates themselves from the competition, and provides value to their customers. In a nutshell, it\u2019s the heart of an organization, made up of goals, aspirations, and unknowns.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This fact alone is a large part of why strategic initiatives fail 50% of the time\u2014it\u2019s a large part of why organizations simply aren\u2019t good at strategic planning. They don\u2019t know how to approach planning an initiative if doesn\u2019t have a certain outcome with metrics defined. Why? Strategy should be a priority across the organization and you want to be enable a strategic plan that sets the direction of success.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Don\u2019t have access to those at the executive level? No problem.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When asking yourself who cares the most about strategic planning, the top answer is most likely executives. And you\u2019re right. They are responsible for setting the vision. However, not everyone has easy access to those in the executive suite.<\/p>\n<p>You can absolutely approach upper management teams\u2014directors, managers, those in finance\u2014as they are responsible for delivering strategy, but they may be struggling with translating it into actionable plans. And, strategic objects are going to require multiple teams, areas of expertise, and change management since it often effective changes or creates new capabilities. Many don\u2019t know where to even begin.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Just to reiterate, who is a part of the process?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Everyone, but it\u2019s typically the leadership team that <em>initiates\u00a0<\/em>the strategic vision. But they don\u2019t always hand it off effectively, which presents a huge opportunity for the PMO, especially PMO\u2019s looking to be EPMO\u2019s. Do not hesitate to approach the executive level to take this on.<\/p>\n<p>If you are the PMO, you are in a great position to include IT, the business, and enterprise architects in this.\u00a0 Think about our strategic objective to use digital to connect and create loyalty through a digital customer experience? It is going to take, at minimum, IT, several areas of the business, and architects to deliver strategy and operationalize it.<\/p>\n<p>If you are still hesitant, remember, IT and digital are absolutely starting to impact how organizations do business, as they are no longer just about increasing efficiency, and CEO\u2019s are expecting digital to increase profit margins by 84%. Clearly, they could have quite an impact on the strategic planning process. Now, let\u2019s quickly review some of the main points of this blog.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The best ways to assemble your strategic planning team: <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to reach those at the executive level, but if you can\u2019t, go to directors, managers, and\/or those in finance.<\/li>\n<li>As the PMO or the EPMO, you should start doing this. This is the future value you can bring to your organization.<\/li>\n<li>If you aren\u2019t in the PMO, you can partner with them to advance their role in the organization.<\/li>\n<li>Teams should be able to be allocated to the plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You now have the team, the defined metrics, and the beginning of a strategic plan.
