In the first blog in this series, \u201cContinuous Architecture: Architect Products Not Solutions and Focus on Quality Attributes<\/a>,<\/strong>”\u00a0I shared two of the six principles that guide an agile mindset, influenced from the book, \u201cContinuous Architecture: Sustainable Architecture in an Agile and Cloud-Centric World<\/a>.\u201d This blog highlights principle #3,\u00a0Delay design decisions until they are needed,\u00a0<\/strong>and principle #4,\u00a0Architect for change<\/strong>. Let\u2019s jump in.<\/p>\n

To achieve greater business agility, consider three and four of the six principles that guide an agile mindset.<\/strong><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Delay design decisions until they are needed<\/strong>: EAs must establish principles, quality attributes, and guidance upfront, and wait to make the design decisions in the execution stages. Here\u2019s the debate:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Supporters of a waterfall approach to planning and execution argue that time spent in designing is a worthwhile investment \u2013 with the hope that less time and effort will be spent fixing a bug in the early stages of a products lifecycle. Critics argue in a business environment where priorities, features, and demands change rapidly, waterfall assumes that designers can foresee problem areas without extensive prototyping. They argue the design decisions should be made later when more information is available and required.<\/p>\n

    For continuous architecture, design decisions should be made \u201cwhen they must\u00a0<\/em>be made\u201d rather than at the beginning when articulating the vision of a product. The quality attributes of integration may be known early on, but with advancements in technology, the appropriate solution for the design may change. By making decisions in the execution stages, you avoid choosing an outdated technology if your strategy is 5 years ahead.<\/p>\n

This enables them to change many architectural elements independent of other architectural elements \u2013 helping them adapt to change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
