Yet our own experience might tell us otherwise. Chaotic conference rooms where the extroverts bark and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts?language=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introverts lose out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have made skeptics of the best of us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSadly, it is not as simple as making people communicate and hoping that innovation ensues,\u201c Matthew Guest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/se\/Documents\/technology-media-telecommunications\/deloitte-digital-collaboration.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a report for Deloitte.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the stakes are high in getting collaboration right. Researchers at the MIT <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sloanreview.mit.edu\/article\/why-your-company-needs-more-collaboration\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sloan Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describe it as \u201ccentral to how digitally advanced companies create business value and establish competitive advantage.\u201d The most successful companies, they say, understand that digital transformation \u201cdemands a focus on cooperation and collaboration that is unprecedented for most enterprises.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>An Evolution of Ideas and Tools<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaboration emerged as a management buzzword in the 1990s as a key component of an organization\u2019s \u201ccontinuous improvement.\u201d MIT\u2019s Sloan School of Management and Toyota\u2019s leadership led the charge, encouraging businesses to build learning communities and peer networks. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward to the present era of Zoom video chats and crowdsourcing, where digital tools are woven into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">group approaches to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">idea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Competition is no longer linear, or even cyclical, but hyper-simultaneous. Teams build, test, launch, and tweak multiple products at once. Welcome to iteration on amphetamines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today more than 61 percent of companies are collaborating directly with suppliers, partners, and customers, according to a recent Price Waterhouse Cooper <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/advisory-services\/innovation-benchmark-findings.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innovation Benchmark Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>From Creative Spark to Innovation, Together<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishing effective collaboration requires a mindset, a set of approaches, and flexibility. \u00a0From the get-go, leaders should cede control of idea generation while also keeping teams focused. The best collaborative approaches align with business goals and the talent at hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideas underscoring successful approaches to collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Brainstorm <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Born in the Mad Men era, brainstorming unleashes ideas by asking the entire team to contribute to the process. Moderators keep discussions structured and domineering voices from domineering. Come up with a problem statement to solve, set a time limit, and encourage all ideas, no matter how wild. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, critiques of the process abound. Jonah Lehrer, for one,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2012\/01\/30\/groupthink\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the practice in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Yorker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, citing research that found \u201cbrainstorming groups think of far fewer ideas than the same number of people who work alone and later pool their ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/05\/your-team-is-brainstorming-all-wrong\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your team is brainstorming all wrong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends letting people work on their own, then convene once everyone\u2019s ideas are more fully formed. Making room for all contributions, as well as for dissent, encourages participants to think harder and question assumptions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Innovation Feedback<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Collaboration that incorporates debate and criticism often stimulates better ideas. This \u201cdebate factor\u201d in collaboration enables <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gregsatell\/2015\/05\/29\/the-little-known-secret-to-pixars-creative-success\/#2ee509a538b2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pixar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teams, for example, \u00a0to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transform something \u201cfrom suck to not-suck,\u201d according to founder Ed Catmull.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purpose of creative feedback is to move the project forward. Anything that does not fulfill that purpose\u2014no matter who it comes from\u2014has no place in a feedback session,\u201d \u00a0Greg Satell wrote for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/gregsatell\/2015\/05\/29\/the-little-known-secret-to-pixars-creative-success\/#1c5d094638b2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Pixar approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scrum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Hailing from technology development requiring cascading rounds of iterations, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrum.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> assigns specific team roles to allow <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developers to make quick, effective decisions. Non-technology companies have adopted the approach to ensure teams shepherd ideas quickly and effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Industrial Mashup \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the age of the sharing economy and Internet of Things, in which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industries recognize the need for digital partners with expertise in software, data analytics, data security and connectivity, companies are increasingly turning to partners, and sometimes even competitors, to get the job done.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forming new alliances called \u201cindustrial mash-ups\u201d by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, organizations are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joining forces to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/11\/is-collaboration-the-new-innovation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">move<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> products more quickly to market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boeing, for example, created a network of services to support airline maintenance and repair using the mashup approach. Its Fleet Solutions, integrating internal teams with suppliers and customers, has improved reliability, plane availability, while also reducing costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">External partnerships can add more complexity to collaborations, but they can also unlock more groundbreaking innovations. When Proctor and Gamble decided its research and development teams were failing to produce the best ideas, it turned outward. In a strategy called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1671971\/how-serious-play-leads-to-breakthrough-innovation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect + Develop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, teams worked with a network of scientists and entrepreneurs around the world. The approach gave birth to the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, as an example. Today more than 35 percent of new products at P&amp;G come from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2006\/03\/connect-and-develop-inside-procter-gambles-new-model-for-innovation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideas outside the company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>From Constraints, Freedom<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting collaboration right often comes down to creating a structure to let it grow. As with a sonnet or haiku, creativity can flourish within a construct \u2013 as long as it has some give. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust as games like soccer and football need rules, so too does this kind of work,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1671971\/how-serious-play-leads-to-breakthrough-innovation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Bruce Nussbaum in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creative Intelligence<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cBut you can\u2019t be so rigid that you limit the free flow of ideas: A magic circle requires a balance of structure and looseness.
