{"id":391,"date":"2014-05-14T16:12:33","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T16:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portfolio-perspectives.planview.com\/?p=391"},"modified":"2016-11-18T10:54:38","modified_gmt":"2016-11-18T16:54:38","slug":"improve-billable-field-utilization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/improve-billable-field-utilization\/","title":{"rendered":"Too Busy to Improve Billable or Field Utilization? $6,000,000 a Year Busy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a recent Field Services conference, I asked the audience to make the following calculations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Multiply the <i>Average Billable Hourly Rate (or Cost)<\/i> per person and the <i>Average Number of Hours<\/i> that person should be \u201coff bench\u201d per year. (When we looked at industry averages, we came up with $200\/person X 2,175 and came up with $435,000 that represents how much an individual would contribute to the company\u2019s bottom line if they were 100% utilized.)<\/li>\n<li>Now multiply that amount to the number of full-time, client-services personnel.<\/li>\n<li>The last thing we did during our exercise was then to measure how much a 1% improvement on their current utilization would impact the company.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Annual Increase Chart\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/annual-increase-chart.jpg\" alt=\"Annual Increase Chart\" width=\"438\" height=\"311\" \/><small>Source: <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/go.planview.com\/field-services-resources-for-revenue.html?tactic=perspectives\" target=\"_blank\">Resources as Revenue, 2014<\/a><\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Imagine the group&#8217;s surprise when I saw companies with 500 service technicians and\/or billable consultants calculate that if they improved their processes with goal of seeing a modest 1% improvement the immediate effect to their bottom line was more than 2 million dollars a year!<\/p>\n<p>According to recent research cited in the white paper, <a title=\"Resources as Revenue White Paper\" href=\"https:\/\/go.planview.com\/field-services-resources-for-revenue.html?tactic=perspectives\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Resources as Revenue: Field and Professional Services in the Era of Economic and Human Resource Hurdles<\/i><\/a>, <b>organizations that adopt effective resource management tools are seeing an <i>average 3% improvement<\/i> in resource utilization.
