Whether you welcome it or hate it, change typically comes with a unique set of challenges. In the most recent \u201cAsk the Expert\u201d webcast, Colin Scott introduced the idea of active inertia. He talked about how the apparent resistance to change is actually rooted in the fact that, over time, what were good principles can become impediments to delivering value in a complex business environment.<\/p>\n

Colin revealed these five steps for successful change management, based on his experience:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Highlight the need<\/li>\n
  2. Create the vision<\/li>\n
  3. Get executive sponsorship<\/li>\n
  4. Address concerns<\/li>\n
  5. Demonstrate value quickly<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For each of these steps, Colin identified the major activities that must be carried out and, perhaps even more importantly, drew attention to the major obstacles encountered when adopting change.     At the end of May\u2019s webcast, the attendees voted on the topic \u201cEnsuring What is Delivered Matches What Was Asked\u201d for the next live webcast on June 1.<\/p>\n

    Business managers within enterprises repeatedly try to \u201chelp\u201d the IT team by translating their vision into a list of applications they want built. The organization believes these technologies will result in desired business outcomes that will result in achieving their mission.<\/p>\n

    The problem is these desired outcomes are rarely communicated to the project team, and almost never measured after the project is delivered. Projects can take on a life of their own, and often the scope continuously deviates from the original agreement.
