It starts drifting the moment work begins.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most organizations don&#8217;t notice that drift until a quarterly review forces the question, and by then the date is already missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A plan that was right in January stays right only if someone keeps proving it still is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gap between approval and awareness is showing up in the data. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/lp\/strategy-execution-benchmark-prm\/get-report\/\">Planview&#8217;s 2025 State of Strategy Execution Benchmark Report<\/a> found that organizations are executing faster than ever, and they are less confident, not more, that they can adapt when conditions change. Only 28% say they can adapt quickly today, down from 40% in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speed without a way to catch drift gets you to the wrong outcome faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI raises the stakes on this. It can generate a plan, reallocate capacity, or approve a reprioritization in seconds, but none of that speed confirms the assumptions behind the decision still hold. A dependency slips. A supplier misses a shipment. Each of those events happens on its own schedule, and none of them wait for a convenient moment to surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quarterly reviews run on a different schedule entirely. They happen when the calendar says so, not when the plan needs them to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dependency that slipped in week two can sit unnoticed for ten more weeks before the next review even looks for it. Drift waits for the next scheduled review to be discovered.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time a formal review catches what already happened, there&#8217;s no course to correct. The date is already missed and the budget is already committed, so the only options left are damage control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this makes R&amp;D leaders the victim of bad timing. Drift compounds because closing the gap between change and awareness takes deliberate ownership. Every week a slip goes unnoticed is a week the organization had no one watching for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-catch-drift-before-it-escalates\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Catch_Drift_Before_It_Escalates\"><\/span><strong>Catch Drift Before It Escalates<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most organizations find bottlenecks the same way: someone escalates a problem after it has already cost time. A resource conflict or a slipping dependency. And by the time it reaches a status meeting, replanning is the only option left, and replanning after the fact is expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leading organizations are closing that gap by watching for drift continuously instead of waiting for someone to report it. Dependency risk and resource bottlenecks surface while they&#8217;re still a decision, before they become a fire. Escalation tells you what already went wrong. Continuous visibility tells you what&#8217;s about to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gap between these two approaches is not small. Organizations that monitor broadly are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/lp\/strategy-execution-benchmark-prm\/get-report\/\">eight times more likely<\/a> to use that visibility across the entire organization, and they hit 72% of their strategic goals, compared with 49% for organizations still finding out the hard way. They&#8217;re also 13 times more likely to say gathering and analyzing decision-making data is easy. None of that is possible without real-time data to monitor in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thermo Fisher Scientific built that foundation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/resources\/case-study\/thermo-fisher-scientific\/\">cutting manual reporting up to 95%<\/a>, replacing after-the-fact status updates with data current enough to act on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catching drift earlier is only half the job. Reallocating, resequencing, or killing a project is still the reader&#8217;s call.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-rebalancing-is-the-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rebalancing_Is_the_Work\"><\/span><strong>Rebalancing Is the Work<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When conditions shift, reallocating capacity and adjusting priorities in real time is the job itself. Every plan approved in DECIDE eventually meets a moment where conditions have moved, and the plan hasn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The easiest response is to spread the squeeze evenly: trim a little capacity from every project so no single team absorbs the full impact. It&#8217;s also how organizations end up funding nothing well.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alternative takes more effort upfront: know what a reallocation costs and what it protects before making it, so trade-offs are visible instead of assumed. That visibility is what separates organizations that rebalance on purpose from those that redistribute the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cargill used that visibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/resources\/case-study\/cargill\/\">gain full sight into its product and project portfolio<\/a>, which led to a 5% increase in project value capture, a 2% improvement in capital efficiency, and a 25% reduction in time spent on manual tasks. Conagra Brands used the same approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/resources\/case-study\/conagra-brands-improve-efficiency-to-speed-global-product-delivery\/\">unify its view of product development work<\/a> and keep initiatives on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gap between change and response is closed. What gets funded, cut, or protected in that moment is still the reader&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-proactive-beats-fast\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Proactive_Beats_Fast\"><\/span><strong>Proactive Beats Fast<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this is a coincidence. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/lp\/strategy-execution-benchmark-prm\/get-report\/\">Strategy Execution Leaders exceeded their revenue goals<\/a> by 12.1%, while Laggards fell short. The organizations catching drift early and rebalancing on purpose are the same ones outperforming on revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funding the right work and adjusting it in time is most of the job. DECIDE gets a plan moving. PIVOT keeps it honest. Catch drift while you can still change the outcome, before it becomes the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have a capacity decision to defend, and it doesn&#8217;t stop at yes.
