Pair these considerations with internal and external pressures to rapidly adopt generative AI and scale it, and leveraging AI is easier said than done. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>To provide insight into those concerns, we spoke with a group of experts about AI&#8217;s challenges and opportunities.<strong> <\/strong>Here\u2019s the experience that the panelists and moderator bring to the table:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sejal Amin, Chief Technology Officer at Shutterstock,<\/strong> stepped into her role in November 2022, just when Shutterstock was making <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.shutterstock.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/shutterstock-expands-partnership-openai-signs-new-six-year\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"their data deal with OpenAI (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">their data deal with OpenAI<\/a>. She\u2019s led her team in bringing AI to the market throughout this turbulent year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jana Eggers, CEO of Nara Logics<\/strong>, started as a research scientist and now helms the AI platform Nara Logics (and she joked with us that, surprisingly, it\u2019s one that\u2019s actually profitable).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Razat Gaurav, CEO of Planview,<\/strong> has been a student of AI for nearly 30 years, leveraging it in his own work as a product manager and now exploring how generative AI can transform the way customers interact with Planview\u2019s solutions via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/products-solutions\/products\/copilot\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Planview Copilot (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Planview Copilot<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr. Rich Sonnenblick, Chief Data Scientist at Planview,<\/strong> started in old-school classical machine learning, and he\u2019s exploring ways to implement it and generative AI into Planview\u2019s solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ray Wang, Principal Analyst and Founder of Constellation Research,<\/strong> coined the term &#8220;Metaverse Economy&#8221; in 2020. Establish a Policy and Governance Framework for Using Data&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping a close eye on the data that AI is using is important to both you and your customers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to convey the message to customers that even while developing AI products, as Rich says, \u201cwe\u2019re still being great data stewards, we\u2019re being responsible with their data, and they are the primary beneficiary of that value,\u201d you need governance over AI and data.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A data governance framework develops trust between you and your customers. Razat said, \u201cAs we are adopting these new technologies, we have to have a level of assurance that we are going to continue to provide this privacy and security that our customers expect.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, a data policy builds trust by keeping quality high and accurate. Ray added, \u201cYou have \u2018garbage in, garbage out\u2019 scenarios here. Orient Around Business Problems, not FOMO&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than picking up a tool just because it\u2019s got AI in the name, begin with use cases.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sejal advised starting small by finding a use case and then, either finding or building a tool to solve the problem, rather than the other way around. She adds, \u201cIt\u2019s a much better way to tell a return-on-investment story because, at some point, you will have to tell a return-on-investment story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;You can\u2019t wait for everything to get figured out and only then jump in, because it\u2019s going to be too late.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>Razat Gaurav, Planview CEO<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you know which use case to pick?&nbsp;Ray suggests it be one you can solve immediately rather than a broad use case that tries to boil the ocean. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, consider the value of getting access to insights buried in thousands of pages of internal documentation, or summarizing customer contracts and calling out unusual or unfavorable terms. Use cases like those can yield benefits in weeks, not months, says Rich. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example is to add an AI enhancement to customer-facing documentation, if it\u2019s well organized: You can build an AI assistant on top of it in a few days with off-the-shelf tools offered by AWS\/Amazon and others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re struggling, consulting an outside perspective can help narrow it down. Jana suggested working with an analyst to get an industry perspective on the entire picture.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Consider_your_Tech_Stack\"><\/span>3. Increase the AI Literacy of your Organization&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planview.com\/platform\/ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"artificial intelligence (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, but you can\u2019t ignore the human side.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a cultural aspect to introducing more AI, and the more transparent and educative you can be with your frontline employees, mid-tier managers, and leadership, the more effective your change management will be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One benefit of the recent generative AI boom, even though, says Rich, \u201cit\u2019s not the be-all-end-all,\u201d is that generative AI \u201ccan actually be a great gateway to explaining more traditional forms of machine learning and data-driven insights, and making AI accessible and understandable.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than having to review and interpret sophisticated machine learning techniques, employees can consume AI insights as explained by large language models like ChatGPT.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Create_Room_to_Experiment\"><\/span>5. Create Room to Experiment&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The last shift is all about making room to experiment with AI, whether that\u2019s in terms of your budget or your priorities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Razat warned against delaying AI for too long. He said, \u201cYou can\u2019t wait for everything to get figured out and only then jump in, because it\u2019s going to be too late. Because some of these movements are fairly disruptive, not just to your underlying customers, but also to your fundamental business model.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re not a particularly experimentation-friendly organization right now, there are ways to get there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sejal suggested that you may not always have to do a full market research exercise, especially if you have at least some research to start with and a use case selected.
