By answering seven easy multiple-choice questions, they find out where they are in their journey and get recommendations on how to advance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we started collecting responses, we realized how lucky we are to have a front-row seat to the digital transformations underway at some of the world\u2019s largest enterprises. And as we dug a little deeper, we noticed some trends. Early findings.<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">78% of respondents\u2014a&nbsp; significant majority\u2014 haven\u2019t yet fully operationalized their transition to a product-based operating model. They report themselves to be in either Stage 1: Starting Out, Stage 2: Experimentation, or Stage 3: Expansion.&nbsp; While the efforts are positive signs in and of themselves, enterprises don\u2019t fully capture the&nbsp; ROI until new patterns are operationalized in Stage 4. So why is it so hard to get there?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have two hypotheses:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gaining buy-in to experiment in small areas is proving far easier than expanding those efforts across silos;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broad expansion <\/span><b><i>is<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> possible, but takes longer than anticipated, particularly when you take into account ingrained dependencies, complex regulatory environments, and longstanding established processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since <\/span><a href=\"\/did-your-organization-wake-up-as-a-software-company-consider-value-stream-management-vsm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the project to product shift<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a multi-year process, it can be easy for organizations to get disoriented and lose their way. As the Maturity Assessment results show, progress is uneven across the seven dimensions of the change required to reach maturity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"lazyload\" alt=\"\" height=\"362\" data-src=\"https:\/\/media.planview.com\/tasktop_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/7-dimensions-of-change-image.png\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The seven dimensions of change in the shift from project to product<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, a large financial institution can be making great strides in managing its backlogs and prioritization but is still unable to react quickly to market changes, limited by a handful of highly governed release windows each year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you, like so many of your peers, find yourself in the initial stages of a project to product transformation, we have some advice on how to accelerate your efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasktop.com\/project-to-product-maturity-assessment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Curious about where you are in your Project to Product journey? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take the Maturity Assessment today.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Moving_beyond_experimentation\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moving beyond experimentation<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organizations that have begun to move from traditional project-based models to a product-centric approach may find themselves struggling to move past the Experimentation phase. If you find yourself here, there are a few key steps you can take to give the experiment a solid foundation for moving forward.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Define success in advance and establish it upfront. <\/span><a href=\"\/just-get-in-the-water-the-right-metrics-to-help-your-value-stream-management-journey-swim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Making it measurable is the key<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Experiment with a product that goes from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tasktop.com\/guide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ideation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> all the way through to Deployment and Support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, preferably with a single Product Owner for all stages. That way, you\u2019ll see the impact of your changes at each stage of the product lifecycle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"\/make-your-okrs-customer-centric-and-let-the-value-flow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Map and manage time from your customer\u2019s perspective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; internal metrics may measure the number of story points completed or deployments per day, but customers don\u2019t care about these internal checkpoints.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Understand the dependencies, including your shared <\/span><a href=\"\/organizational-design-for-platform-teams\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">internal and platform teams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"\/devops-enterprise-summit-2019-speaker-qa-dominica-degrandis-principal-flow-advisor-tasktop\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make the improvement work itself visible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> so your leaders understand the level of effort it takes to create this change when expansion begins.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expanding_across_the_organization\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Expanding across the organization<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A common mistake is to rush into Expansion before you\u2019ve written a good solid playbook for other product teams to use. It may seem counterintuitive, but make sure you have deep learnings and repeatable patterns before trying to put others through the same transition. If you\u2019re having trouble gaining traction as you stretch your boundaries, you may find some of these tips useful.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maximize learnings and establish good patterns before you expand;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure to consider internal and platform products. Your customer-facing products depend on these, and can\u2019t advance without addressing these dependencies. Take the time to work through a deep slice of your product portfolio in this phase;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasktop.com\/customers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tell stories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to drive culture change; share your successes, your challenges and your learnings to bring attention to your efforts and build momentum;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Get your leaders\u2019 attention by tying your results to the <\/span><a href=\"\/a-cpo-and-a-cfo-walk-into-a-bar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">business metrics that matter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to them, whether that is top-line revenue, cost savings, talent retention, or others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Culture_is_the_key\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Culture is the key<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As with any large-scale change efforts, culture is the key. The paradox is that although people desire change, they resist it at the same time. A shift from project to product introduces risk and uncertainty, and how organizations manage the human element can make or break their efforts. A few things to remember when you\u2019re dealing with culture change:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure all team members are included\u2014transformation isn\u2019t just for the cool kids!&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make it easier to do things differently, not harder. Don\u2019t slow experimentation down with red tape;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prepare for fixed mindsets and don\u2019t be critical of the current state. Remember, it got you where you are today;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t dismiss people\u2019s good ideas just because you\u2019re not ready for them.
