You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/simon-sinek_perspective-activity-6752944125282152449-Pgo7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">view the video here<\/a> \u2013 and I encourage you to do so. Here are some of the key points Mr. Sinek makes, upon which I have extrapolated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-individuals-have-unconscious-bias\">Individuals have unconscious bias<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of our lives is molded by our own individual experiences and background. Because of that, each person has unconscious bias that limits their ability to recognize and understand how circumstances affect other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we all can, and should, take steps to reduce our own unconscious biases, eliminating them completely may be a long journey. Rather than waiting for that to come, we must look for opportunities and methods for eliminating the <em>effect<\/em> of those biases within our organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/info.planview.com\/crowdsourcing-challenges-7-best-practices-_ebook_im_en_reg.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/v.a-planview-ebook-crowdsourcing-challenges_800x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/v.a-planview-ebook-crowdsourcing-challenges_800x200.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/v.a-planview-ebook-crowdsourcing-challenges_800x200-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/v.a-planview-ebook-crowdsourcing-challenges_800x200-768x192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.planview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/v.a-planview-ebook-crowdsourcing-challenges_800x200-750x188.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-diversifying-a-group-creates-broader-overall-perspective\">Diversifying a group creates broader overall perspective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of people with similar profiles may have similar biases, which then causes the group itself to maintain those biases. Diversifying the group creates broader perspective for the group, which diminishes the effect of the group\u2019s collective biases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-perspective-creates-opportunity\">Perspective creates opportunity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Homogeneous groups have gaps in vision, understanding, or knowledge. Smart organizations eliminate those gaps by diversifying groups with people of different backgrounds, knowledge, education, personal relationships, life experiences, and work experiences.<br><br>A broader perspective on how we work, how we live, and how we serve our customers creates opportunity for the business to grow and mature in numerous ways: creating new products, identifying new markets, engaging more employees, raising productivity, improving work\/life balance \u2013 and the list goes on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inclusion-enables-diversity-initiatives-to-pay-dividends\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Inclusion_Enables_Diversity_Initiatives_to_Pay_Dividends\"><\/span>Inclusion Enables Diversity Initiatives to Pay Dividends<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A diversity program itself is insufficient. According to a recent McKinsey research report entitled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diversity Wins: How Inclusion Matters<\/a>,\u201d overall employee sentiment about diversity was relatively positive, sentiment on inclusion was \u201cmarkedly worse.\u201d That\u2019s a problem that needs to be addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Mr. Sinek notes, \u201c[When you have] a diverse group of people with diverse experiences, magic happens, <em>if<\/em> there is a shared set of values and shared vision. Without the shared values and the shared vision, then all that diversity will subdivide into their little tribes, and they\u2019ll go and eat at the lunch tables completely separately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What he means is: A diverse workforce must also be inclusive for it to have any real benefit. Without also being inclusive, a diversity initiative is at best \u201cchecking the box\u201d and at worse simply virtue signaling, and the inherent value of diversity will be left unclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-crowdsourcing-is-what-nurtures-inclusivity\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crowdsourcing_is_What_Nurtures_Inclusivity\"><\/span>Crowdsourcing is What Nurtures Inclusivity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Crowdsourcing initiatives give companies an incredible opportunity to create the inclusivity needed to benefit from their diversity programs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee engagement is a critically important business objective \u2013 and one that crowdsourcing challenges can help foster. The McKinsey report authors noted that \u201c[h]iring diverse talent isn\u2019t enough &#8212; it\u2019s the workplace experience that shapes whether people remain and thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you include a diverse crowd in a challenge, not only are the outcomes potentially magical (as noted by Mr. Sinek), but the participants can clearly see and feel connected to what matters most to the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-actions-you-can-take\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Actions_You_Can_Take\"><\/span>3 Actions You Can Take<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three simple actions you can take to drive inclusion in your diverse organization and make some of that magic happen for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-engage-employees-in-a-campaign-focused-on-improving-diversity-and-inclusivity-in-the-workplace\">1. The very act of inviting diverse groups to participate creates inclusion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations that embrace diverse crowds in the innovation process create the opportunity for fresh perspectives and new thinking that can lead to breakthrough ideas.
